The review that lists the instructions on how to install the device driver is wonderful. However, it did not work for me. I eventually found a different pathway to lead to the correct driver. Schmoofadoop lists the correct driver number for Windows 7 64-bit, but the method, when I followed it, did not install that version.
The driver that worked for me is 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009], as listed in the installation instructions. The version installed was 6.1.7600.16385 [6/21/2006] (I think the driver manufacturer is confused about how version numbers work :P). So, here's how I found the correct one:
Follow the advice and search for the driver on your favorite search engine. Type in 'Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows', the first link should take you where you need to go. You can find the driver under the 'Support' tab on the page. Download it, but don't open it (I tried it that way and it didn't work).
Open Device Manager
Right-click 'Unknown device' > 'Update Driver Software'
'Browse my computer for driver software'
'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
Now, here's where I had to take a different path.
INSTEAD of clicking 'Show All Devices', scroll down the list to find 'Microsoft Common Controller For Windows Class'
In the Model section, find the 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009] version of the driver and install that one.
I tried the main method listed here at least five times, and installed it directly from the file once. After doing it the way I've listed here, it's working perfectly, but I'm giving it a Three-Star review because the manufacturer should provide a working driver with the purchase, or better support for any issues the buyer may encounter. I found nothing useful on HDE's website, and it suggested that I email them for any tech-related support. The item itself is fine, but the manufacturer is below my standards.
