Question: I just installed the latest USB to UART Bridge Virtual COM Port (VCP) drivers on my Mac OSX computer, but system info still depicts the driver version as 1.00. With the board plugged in, go to your device manager and select the COM port the board is plugged into and simply uninstall the drivers there, cant recall off hand what the exact option is but its there under the properties menu.

I have the ESP32 board with Silicon Labs CP2102 controller. When I connect it to my MacBook, I can get the details about this device using the command system_profiler SPUSBDataType, but it is not listed in /dev as a virtual serial port - so I can't communicate with it.

I'm using the official driver downloaded from https://www.silabs.com/products/development-tools/software/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers.

Any ideas how to make it visible in /dev? I have also Windows installed on the same computer where it works fine, so the HW and the USB cable are OK.

I found that macOS High Sierra has blocked the SiLabs kernel extension.

Here are steps to allow this extension:

1. Go to 'System Preferences' -> 'Security & Privacy'
2. In the bottom of the window, you will see a message 'System software from developer 'SiLabs' was blocked from loading.'
3. Click on 'Allow' button
4. Restart your Mac

Now my device is listed as /dev/cu.SLAB_USBtoUART and everything work as expected.

The Allow button did not work for me, so I had to disable checking altogether:

1. Shut Down
2. Hold mac+ R during boot to enter recovery mode
3. Open a terminal
4. type spctl kext-consent disable and press enter
5. Reboot
6. It worked

I can confirm, the SILabs CP210x driver definitely does not work in Windows 10. I'm an embedded systems developer using this chip as the serial console for our SBC, and Windows 10 definitely does not recognize the device.

Crying shame really. We just switched to the SILabs solution *because* it worked in Windows 8.

I suggest you install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if it helps. Follow the steps provided below.

1. Download the drivers from the manufacturer’s website.
2. Right-click on the installer and click on 'Properties'.
3. Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box 'Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select previous Operating System from the drop down.
4. Click on ‘Apply’ and click ‘OK’ and run the file to install it.

It works in Windows 10 after an complete reinstall of Win 10 and newest win 10 driver from Silabs. Something was probably wrong in my registry

I found a Windows 10 driver here that seems to have worked without the need to reinstall the entirety of windows:
